Range Clearance Activities – National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Los Angeles, 2021-2025

This project provided surface and limited subsurface clearance services to safely locate, identify and clear munitions and explosives of concern (MEC), material potentially presenting an explosive hazard (MPPEH) and range-related debris (RRD) at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California.

The KGS SERES 8a Joint Venture (JV) was awarded a four-year contract issued by the USACE Los Angeles District for providing surface and limited subsurface clearance services to safely locate, identify and clear munitions and explosives of concern (MEC), material potentially presenting an explosive hazard (MPPEH) and range-related debris (RRD) at the National Training Center (NTC), Fort Irwin, California. We have an established process for communication with both the USACE and Installation Range Operations personnel required for planning and execution of our clearance services supporting the training mission. During the first three years of the contract, our team of 22 full-time staff removed and processed 534,722 pounds of Materials Documented as Safe (MDAS) and encountered 52,556 live MEC items while providing clearance operations on a total of 219,923 acres of the 750,000-acre range complex. The types of ordnance encountered included projectiles, grenades, rockets, missiles, flares, and sub-munitions. The field team completed 117,224 manhours during the initial three-year period with no lost time or safety-related incidents, demonstrating the JV’s ability to safely perform these services on an active range. In addition to range clearance support, the field team also supported the NTC by providing unexploded ordnance (UXO) awareness training as well as UXO escort and limited construction support/UXO avoidance services as requested by Range Operations.
